This Is Drift
There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to pass an older fish intently swimming in the opposite direction, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. Be mindful of that drift?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is drift?”
Drift is subtle like that. It is so pervasive and ubiquitous that it is essentially unnoticeable to those traveling in a direction aided by it.
Notice, I said “a direction” and not “the direction” because I don’t want to even hint at the notion that drift can be easily recognized by the direction one is heading.
Sometimes we drift far, fast. Other times we drift slightly and ever so slowly.
Whose to say which is worse really. That’s not the point.
The point is it’s happening and we must take notice.
We drift not through life, but in life from ourselves. From the moment we realize who we are.
The truth of that moment is often too much, too scary!
It’s easier to drift from that moment than to face it. To reconcile it!
So we drift, consciously or unconsciously, further and further from the truth. Our truth.
Eventually it becomes unrecognizable, indistinguishable from our current realities.
It becomes no more.
This is the default setting of our world, and unfortunately no one is going to discourage you from operating from this default setting.
Not because they don’t care for you, but because they also don’t know any better.
To quote David Foster Wallace,
“[this has] almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over:..”
This is DRIFT
This is DRIFT
This is DRIFT
It is so hard to do this! To stay the course and live on purpose day in and day out.
But, this is life!
And flourishing is a lifestyle choice.
Stay The Course,
