Trophies vs. Champions
“Trophies look back; Champions look forward”
What a powerful metaphor for a significant, yet subtle, difference between the mindsets we can adopt as we start to experience some success.
It’s taken me a long time to fully appreciate what success really is. That it is much more than the ongoing accumulation of achievements and accolades.
In this issue, I want to hit on the nuances that might get lost in the simple dichotomy of this quote to help you better understand and appreciate authentic success.
Trophies Look Back
Trophies are symbols of the past. They represent completed accomplishments, victories already achieved.
They are tangible reminders of what has already been done. Which is, at times, important because there can be real power in remembrance.
However, the issue arises when looking back morphs into more of a “dwelling on the past”, where an over-fixation on past victories can distract us from what needs to be done and ultimately lead to stagnation.
“Looking Back” also becomes a problem when it serves as constant validation, keeping us from pursuing honest self-assessment.
This is especially problematic for high-performers, in competitive environments, where yesterday's strategic advantage may be obsolete today.
Trophies create this illusion that success is a fixed state, a singular event or moment in time.
Success is a dynamic, continuous process of adaptation and growth.
Trophies are merely milestone markers in a lifelong pursuit of something far greater than any singular moment in time.
Champions Look Forward
A champion is not defined by a single victory but by a consistent pursuit of excellence.
They possess a growth mindset, believing that their abilities can be developed through dedication, adaptability, and hard work.
They are always looking for the next challenge embracing opportunities to test their limits.
Champions are focused on the process. They prioritize the work that needs to be done today, rather than relishing what they have already accomplished.
Looking forward implies a commitment to continuous improvement. Champions are always seeking ways to enhance their skills and performance.
By looking forward, champions are better equipped to adapt to changing circumstances and overcome inevitable obstacles.
They don't get stuck in old ways.
True champions are driven by a deep love for what they do, external rewards, like trophies, are merely distractions to the satisfaction of pushing their full potential.
They are addicted to the feelings associated with simply getting better.
The Difference
The difference lies in understanding that:
Trophies are a snapshot of a past moment.
Being a champion is a continuous state of becoming.
Authentic success is not about accumulating past accolades, but rather maintaining a relentless drive to cultivate your full potential.
To achieve this we must have the humility to learn from the past, the discipline to commit to the process in the present, and the courage to pursue a better future for ourselves and others.
